Charley listened to the steady beep of his transceiver and prayed the mountain would stay quiet. They had to find Reese quickly and get him out before another slide. If another one started, they were low enough on the mountain and close enough to the pine trees that they should be able to make it to safety.

But another avalanche would only bury Reese deeper and obliterate his chance of survival.

The line of men moved in one direction until Reese’s signal started to fade and then in the other. Methodically, they worked the pattern in a 90-degree angle the other way. They were getting close.

“I’ve got him!” one of the searchers called.
